Nano Filtration (NF) removes organic compounds in the 300 to 1,000 molecular weight range. This includes most divalent salts.  Water passes through the membrane at a lower operating pressure than reverse osmosis.  Due to the selective nature of the membrane, water may be softened without the discharge of a brine solution. 

Nano Filtration will effectively reduce and remove most dissolved metals while allowing 10-50% of the sodium chloride to pass through the membrane.  This can be a most effective waste water treatment and in many cases rinse water life extension through recycling.  The ability to pass a portion of the sodium through the membrane allows for a more economical approach to recycling, under certain circumstances,  when compared to reverse osmosis.
