Ultrafiltration is the process that removes fine colloidal suspensions from water using a mechanism similar to reverse osmosis.  The nature of the membrane determines which component(s) permeates and which component(s) is retained.  The sister process to reverse osmosis requires less osmotic pressure to operate and deals with the separation of fairly large molecules, such as proteins, starch, emulsified oils, clays, paints pigments, latex particles etc.
